PHYS 1205 - The Art of Physics

(PBS)
Fall. 3 credits. S-U or letter grade option.

Intended for non-science students. No background in mathematics or science beyond basic high school algebra is assumed.

Y. Grossman.

The laws of physics describe the world we live in. They explain a large range of phenomena, from the subatomic scale up to unimaginable cosmological distances. As we shall discover, these laws are derived from ideas that are actually simple and easy to understand. In a way that is suitable for a non-science student, we will discuss how simple and elegant ideas of symmetry and a few classic experiments led to the development of the laws of physics. We will  describe the basic axioms of classical, relativistic, and quantum physics. We will then touch on some of the most recent developments in 21st century physics, in particular, modern cosmology and the big bang, and the physics of the Large Hadron Collider.
