ASIAN 4420 - Modernity and Beyond in Korean Culture @ (CA-AS) Spring. 3 credits.

Designed for advanced undergraduate students or graduate students who have a historical background on modern Korean history to further understand the relationship between Korean cultural issues in terms of modernity, Imperialism, Americanization and postcoloniality from the viewpoint of critical/cultural studies and the formation of Korean popular culture. This class will introduce undergraduate/graduate students to the central critical questions, comparative/conjectural perspective on the modernity issue and the formation/transformation of modern subjectivity in Korea along with the delineation of socio-historical upheavals of modern circumstances including Japanese colonization, American military occupation and the military dictatorship in modern Korean time.
