ENGL 2675 - Cultures of the Cold War

This class aims to approach the literature and culture of the Cold War as the birth of the present “Age of Information,” as well as the origin of modern notions of privacy now being superseded. Units of study will include intelligence (espionage), advertising (publicity), space (science fiction), atomic weapons, race, and sexuality. Authors will include Sylvia Plath, Archibald MacLeish, Patricia Highsmith, Graham Greene, Ray Bradbury, Allen Ginsberg, James Baldwin, Frank O’Hara, and others. Films may include Seconds, Dr. Strangelove, and In a Lonely Place. As time permits, there may be units on painting and/or music of the Cold War era.
