AMST 1101 - Introduction to American Studies

(HB) (CA-AS)
Spring. 4 credits.

B. Maxwell.

This course is an introduction to interdisciplinary considerations of American culture. We will reflect on topics ranging from Native American relations to the land, to the European conquest of the Americas, to the development of American civic life and political culture and the ongoing African American struggle for freedom and equality. We will also study immigration as a (threatened) constant in national life and labor, the distinctions between mass culture and popular culture, the promise of American life, and violence as a persisting national woe. We’ll examine these themes through literature, historical writing, music, art, film, architecture, and political economy in the United States. The course will also give attention to the many methods through which scholars have, over time, developed the discipline of American Studies, and to ongoing debates over the intellectual and political stakes of those methods.
