Topic: American Novel Since the 1960s
An introduction to recent American fiction through close reading and discussion of some of its fine examples. Some themes include political upheaval, resistance and revolt, conceptions of gender and race, immigration, social marginality, the recovery of history, and verbal experimentation. Readings will include Pynchon’s The Crying of Lot 49, Doctorow’s The Book of Daniel, Kingston’s The Woman Warrior, Welch’s The Death of Jim Loney, stories by Donald Barthelme, Morrison’s Beloved, and Viramontes’ Their Dogs Came with Them.
