In this course we will examine major trends in American drama from 1960 to the present. How has theatre helped shape our notion of what it means to be an American in the second half of the 20th century?  What role has politics played in recent theatrical experimentation?  How has performance been used as a platform for constructing and deconstructing conceptions of identity, community, and nationality?  In this course we will examine major trends in American drama from 1960 to the present.  Reading for the class focus on theatre that responds directly to tor intervenes in moments of social crisis, including: the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Women’s Movement, the Gay and Lesbian Liberation Movement, and AIDS.
