BIOG 1107 - Introductory Biology I: From Atom to Cell

Summer. 3 credits.

Forbidden Overlap: Students may not receive credit for both BIOG 1107 and BIOMG 1350 .
Prerequisite: one year of high school biology or permission of instructor.

Staff.

This course provides an introduction to cellular biology from a molecular perspective. Reviews the major biomolecules, such as DNA, RNA, protein, and lipids, with the goal of understanding how they physically interact to perform cellular functions. Topics include DNA replication, transcription, protein synthesis, cell cycling, and Mendelian genetics, as well as medical topics such as cancer and prion diseases. In addition to textbook readings, problem sets will be assigned regularly and students will lead in-class discussions of papers from the primary literature. Although this is a lecture-only course, students will gain a familiarity with major molecular biology techniques and acquire experience at designing their own experiments.
