ASRC 4510 - [Writing Australia: Carey and Malouf](crosslisted) (also ENGL 4735 ) (LA-AS) Fall. 4 credits.
Next offered 2013-2014.
G. Farred.
This course will explore the different, yet intersecting ways, in which Peter Carey and David Malouf, engage Australia as a “problem.” As in all setter colonies, there is a long – and genocidal, in Australia’s case – history of conflict between the indigenous population and the settlers. Carey, reductively phrased, explorers the “problem” of Australia from the settlers’ position. His work, especially on Ne Kelley, takes up the issue of Irish immigration. For his part, David Malouf, part Lebanese Australian, has produced a body of work that is, in the best possible sense of the term, “haunted” by the Aboriginal presence – and, of course, the ever-present of the Aboriginal past.
