Fall, (yearlong). 4 credits.

The is a yearlong course. Students MUST enroll in ENGL 6570 in the fall and ENGL 6580  in the spring. Students will receive an “R” at the end of the fall semester and a grade at the end of the year for both courses. The course is team-taught.

M. Brady, M. Crawford.

Fred Moten writes, “Frame cuts frame,” as he theorizes about the improvisation embedded in literature, visual art, and music. This yearlong seminar will “linger in the cut” as we will explore the cultural nationalism, body politics, and performance of memory that shape Chicana/o and African American cultural productions. Zoot suits, jazz, and images of Mexico and Africa will inform our focus on complicated performances of cultural nationalism and contingent memories. Theories and performances of latinidad will rub against theories and performances of blackness as a unifying concept.
