Topic for spring 2013: Art & Identity in Colonial Latin America

The colonial period in Latin America (circa 1520s-1820s) witnessed the formation of one of the most diverse societies in the early modern world.  This seminar explores the role of visual culture in the construction of identity in Latin America.  In particular, it looks at colonial categories of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and space, with an emphasis on their varied manifestations in the visual realm.  Examination of portraiture, prints, murals, and material culture will guide our analysis of how colonial subjects articulated identity through diverse visual languages.  The course will be organized around a set of case studies in order to gain comparative perspectives on Latin American visual practices across time and space.  Course readings draw from primary sources and theoretical perspectives on coloniality/postcoloniality, race, and gender.
