MAE 2030 - Dynamics

Spring, summer. 3 credits.

Prerequisite: ENGRD 2020 , MATH 2930 , or permission of instructor. Formerly TAM 2030.

Staff.

Newtonian dynamics of a particle, systems of particles and of a rigid body. Force, torque, impulse, momentum, angular momentum, energy, and vibrations. Two-dimensional rigidbody Kinematics including motion relative to a moving frame. Three dimensional rigid-body dynamics are briefly introduced at the instructor’s option. Laboratory experiments demonstrate some basic principles.

Outcome 1: Student will be able to draw free-body diagrams, distinguishing forces from inertial effects.

Outcome 2: Describe particle motion in 1-D, 2-D and 3-D employing Cartesian and path coordinates.

Outcome 3: Characterize 2-D motion, including vector angular velocities and accelerations.

Outcome 4: Apply Newton/Euler laws to the motion of particles and rigid bodies.

Outcome 5: Use the principles of linear/angular impulse-momentum and work-energy to solve dynamics problems.
