ANTHR 2455 - Real World Anthropology

(SBA-AS)
Spring. 4 credits.

K. March.

This course is designed to expose students to the range of ways and fields within which practitioners employ anthropological theory, methods and perspectives. Class format will include both lectures and workshop sessions with invited speakers. Both the invited speakers and the discussion topics will represent different broadly defined fields in which anthropologists practice. Through class discussion and writing, students will be expected to critically consider such issues as: research ethics, professional responsibility, the academic versus activist role, methodological practices, and the relationship between individual practitioners and the national, international, and organization contexts within which they work. Students will produce a major research paper examining a particular field of “practical” anthropology of their interest.
