DEA 2700 - Healthy Places: How Design & Planning Affect Public Health


Fall. 3 credits.

Drawing from the fields of public health, environmental psychology, design, urban planning , architecture and landscape architecture, we examine how the physical environment influences health and health behaviors. We consider a variety of contexts from rooms and buildings to parks and cities. We consider outcomes related to physical and mental health, diet, physical activity and obesity.

Outcome 1: Comprehend the influence of the built and natural environment on human health and health behaviors.

Outcome 2: Think critically to apply theory and other content to real world contexts.

Outcome 3: Apply multidisciplinary perspectives including from planning, public health, environmental psychology.

Outcome 4: Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, related to environment and health issues

Outcome 5: Develop interpersonal skills; work effectively together.

Outcome 6: Understand interdependence and social responsibility through community outreach project as well as case studies.
