This course introduces students to fundamental themes and trends in American history from the eve of the founding of European settlements in North America through the Civil War era. The course attends to issues of unity and diversity in American society, as well as the American nation’s emerging role in the wider world. The course emphasizes comparisons between different regions, interactions between peoples of different cultures, and the impact of new political, economic, and social institutions on the lives of everyday people. Readings will be drawn from primary documents, assigned texts, and significant essays. Course assignments aim at developing students’ ability to think and write critically and historically.
