This class explores the Warring States period in Chinese history through the genre of military texts, such as Sunzi’s Art of War. We will address such issues as the role of warfare in the emergence of a strong centralized state, the role of violence in human society, and the transition from older values and ways of understanding war to new, carefully theorized approaches to state violence.
