A study of the historical, geo-strategic, political, economic and social (including racial and cultural) forces affecting the domestic and international experiences of Caribbean societies. Special attention will be given to conflicting definitions and perceptions of the Caribbean; contending theories of Caribbean social structure and models of development; the continuing salience of struggles for change and transformation; prospects of regional integration; Caribbean Diaspora/homeland interactions and transactions; and Caribbean challenges to the global system especially with regard to the region’s relations with the United States and the region’s position in the context of the North-South divide and the challenges of globalization.
