Introduces the interdisciplinary field of social inequalities in health, with a particular focus on sociological contributions to the area. Examine links between health outcomes and various types of social status, including but not limited to socioeconomic status, gender, race, and ethnicity. Through assigned readings, in-class discussions, and course assignments, we will examine theoretical explanations for the relationships between these factors and various health outcomes, as well as the role of public policy in shaping health outcomes of communities.

Outcome 1: Understand population-level social disparities in health outcomes.

Outcome 2: Assess theoretical explanations for these disparities and possible policy solutions at multiple levels of analysis.

Outcome 3: Gain in-depth knowledge and research experience in specific topic areas within the broader subject of social disparities in health.

Outcome 4: Identify ways in which social class, race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexuality, and other social forces shape people’s health.
