A panoramic survey of twentieth-century Latin American literature in translation. Authors include Jorge Luis Borges, Roberto Bolaño, Reinaldo Arenas, Dianela Eltit, Ricardo Piglia, Cristina P. Rossi, Rosario Ferré and others. This course will introduce students to the politics and aesthetics of the “new Novel” in Latin America, the so-called “Boom” and “post-Boom” literature, as well as debates surrounding twenty-first century writings. Close readings will alternate with critical and theoretical frameworks for the study of Latin American literature, from cultural studies to political theory.
