P. Keller.

An introductory film theory/film studies course designed to give undergraduates a basic understanding of major film concepts while focusing on one of Spain’s major directors, Pedro Almodovar.  The course will offer a survey of Almodovar’s works, dating from the early 80s to the present day, placing them in the context of Spanish history, politics, and culture.  Specifically, we will focus on Madrid’s counter cultural punk rock movement (also know as La Movida) and the politics surrounding the period of post-dictatorship and Spain’s transition to Democracy, leading up to discussions on how Almodovar’s films provide new insights into Spain in the 21st century.  In addition to specific works by and written on Almodovar, the course will also draw on queer studies, gender and sexuality studies, as well as different theories of the spectacle and current debates on collective memory.
