PMA 4435 - [Media Arts Laboratory: Culture/Cinema/Sensation]

(crosslisted) ANTHR 4035
(LA-AS)
Not offered 2015-2016. 4 credits. Letter grades only.

Permission of instructor required.

Staff.

This first class in an intensive two-course sequence brings together practice and theory to explore the intersection of the arts, cinema, and anthropology.  Students will train in media practices during this first class, focusing on developing skills in cinematography, sound recording, planning, and visual strategies. Students will also view a range of works for a critical introduction to visual anthropology, avant-garde cinema, and contemporary art under the rubric of sensory ethnography.  This new initiative supports students wishing to integrate audiovisual media in their work and seeks to foster a complementarity between text and image in ethnographically inflected work. Students who plan to take the second course in the sequence in the fall will also conduct media-based research and production over the summer.
