SPAN 3940 - Spanish Cinema: 1950 - 75


     
Spring. 4 credits.

Prerequisites: SPAN 2140 , SPAN 2150 , SPAN 2170 , or CASE Q++, or permission of instructor.

This course offers an in-depth survey of Spanish films directed and producd between the years 1950 and 1975.  In addition to studying what some argue to be Spain’s three greatest director’s of all time - “the three Bs” (Luis Buñuel, Juan Antonio Bardem, and Luis García Berlanga) - we will also examine films by Carlos Saura, Basilio Martin Patino, Vicente Escrivá, Victor Erice, and Fernando Fernán Gómez.  The course will focus on common thematic and stylistic tropes among directors considered to be at the forefront of the Nuevo cine español, or Spanish New Wave Cinema.  Other topics to be discussed include: the politics of censorship, exile, aperturismo, the Salamanca and Barcelona schools, violence and language, dictatorship, the gaze and structure of desire.  All film viewings are mandatory and will be scheduled outside of class.  Supplemental readings will provide historical context and background, biographical information, and introductory theory and criticism.
