ASRC 3410 - Saving Darfur Children: Humanitarian Arguments Around Africa

(GB) (CA-AS)
Spring. 4 credits.

S. Grovogui.

In 2007, six members of the French charity organization Zoe’s Ark were charged by the government of Chad for child abduction, along with presumed accomplices. The incident highlighted the plight of children affected by conflicts and the nature of the activities of aid agencies and organizations. Among them Zoe’s Ark posed the principle that African children essentially become wards humanitarians during war because the parents are incapable and in many cases unwilling to take care of them. This course examines arguments used by humanitarian organizations to justify both the principle of intervention and their own activities in Africa.
