ANTHR 1490 - Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

Enrollment limited to: CPEP students. Offered in Romulus, NY. This course is part of the CPEP program.

J. Zeserson, K. Murdough.

We will explore core concepts and research methods of cultural anthropology by reading complete ethnographies, extracted chapters, and journal articles. Students will become familiar with concepts of culture, social construction, and symbolic representation; and with methods of participant observation, interviewing, and kinship patterning. We will contrast qualitative with quantitative methodologies, and interpretive with explanatory analyses. We will address issues of bias and inclusion/exclusion.

Course readings will include primarily studies done in the U.S. and Asia.
