ASIAN 2208 - Introduction to Southeast Asia

This course introduces critical issues in the study of Southeast Asia (Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam) related to geography, history, religion, ideology, language, literature, society, culture, and politics and also in the ways that scholars have thought about them. Themes to be discussed include Indic versus Sinic orientations, tradition, modernity, warfare, colonialism, nationalism, revolution, globalization, and international relations. This course is relevant to all majors, and no previous knowledge of the region is required.  Students will have an opportunity to develop projects on topics of interest to them. (GE)
