MAE 5780 - Feedback Control Systems

Fall. 4 credits. Letter grades only.

Co-meets with MAE 4780 . Graduate version of MAE 4780 .

D. MacMartin.

This course covers the analysis and design of linear systems in both the Laplace domain and time domain. The course includes a laboratory that examines modeling and control of representative dynamic processes. Laplace transforms and transfer functions are used to study performance specifications, root locus, and frequency response methods. State space topics include stability, controllability, observability, state feedback, and observers.

Outcome 1: Students will be able to obtain the linearization of a non-linear system about an operating point.

Outcome 2: Construct a transfer function representation of a linear dynamical system.

Outcome 3: Manipulate block diagrams and transfer functions.

Outcome 4: Understand the relationship between a linear system and its frequency response, and know how to construct a Bode plot.

Outcome 5: Know how to design traditional controllers such as Proportional, Integral, Derivate (PID), and Lead-Lag.

Outcome 6: Understand the concepts of stability, including gain and phase margins and Nyquist stability condition.

Outcome 7: Design control systems in the frequency domain using state space and Bode/Nyquist techniques.

Outcome 8: Design control systems in the time domain using state space and Root Locus techniques.
