ENGL 4655 - Walden and Beyond

(crosslisted) AMST 4645
(HB) (LA-AS)
Fall. 4 credits.

J. Warren.

An intensive study of Henry David Thoreau’s Walden, accompanied by readings in Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience,” his deathbed collection The Maine Woods, and his late natural history essays. With the major focus on Thoreau and his writing projects, we will also read two contemporary writers whose work resonates strongly with Thoreau’s vision: Gary Snyder, environmental poet and essayist who will be visiting campus during our first week of classes; and Robert Macfarlane, a prolific young British writer whose book The Old Ways has much in common with Thoreau’s essay “Walking.”
