ASIAN 6681 - [Intellectual History of Empire] (crosslisted) HIST 6810 Fall. Next offered 2020-2021. 4 credits. Student option grading.
Co-meets with ASIAN 4491 .
N. Sakai.
This seminar explores the long-standing interest and intellectual investment in the analysis of the Japanese empire. The comparative aspect of the approach to the study of empires is emphasized in this seminar partly because some legacies of the empire have been appropriated by the post-World War II American empire. It is also because the seminar addresses the growing controversy over and publications about the historical significance and contemporary forms of “empire” in general. In this respect too, comparison as a methodological device is important for this seminar in view of the weaknesses inherent in past area-studies-oriented approaches to the Japanese and American empires.
