ANSC 2710 - Canine Reproduction - Big Dog, Little Dog


     
Spring (weeks 1-7). 1 credit. Letter grades only.

Recommended prerequisite: ANSC 2400 .

Emphasis is on reproduction in the domestic dog; however, aspects particular to reproduction in wolves, coyotes, the dingo, and jackals will also be presented. Students will learn the physiology of the normal reproductive cycle as well as some common disorders.

Outcome 1: List the major events in the domestication of the common dog.

Outcome 2: Identify the major reproductive organs and describe the contribution of function of each.

Outcome 3: List the major hormones controlling the reproductive process, identify the target cells and list their products.

Outcome 4: List the stages of the estrous cycle of the female and describe the reproductive behaviors common for each stage.

Outcome 5: Identify the stage of the estrous cycle of the female based on vaginal cell cytology.

Outcome 6: List and describe the various methods of determining ovulation in the female.

Outcome 7: Explain the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods of determining pregnancy in the female.

Outcome 8: Describe the major events in parturition and identify signs of dystocia.

Outcome 9: List and explain the advantages and disadvantages of the methods to treat the “mismated” female.

Outcome 10: Describe the differences between embryonic and somatic cell cloning.
