This course is a seminar course intended for graduate students in Design and Environmental Analysis and graduate students in related fields. The course introduces students to the history, theories, and major research trends in the field of human-environment relations. Human environment relations refer to the interaction between the built environment and human behavior. The course draws upon literature in the disciplines of environmental psychology, human factors/ergonomics, sociology, human development, facility planning, and urban planning.

Outcome 1: Comprehend historical foundations of the current field of human-environment relations and familiarize them with the major theories, conceptual frameworks, and the research areas in the field of human-environment relations (grounding in disciplines and fields).

Outcome 2: Explain academic areas of study that contribute to the field of human-environment relations (multidisciplinary perspectives).

Outcome 3: Develop an in-depth examination of the literature in one of the research areas of human-environment relations and prepare them for future course work and research in this field (critical thinking).
