(HB) (CA-AS) Satisfies Option 1.
Fall. Not offered 2017-2018. 4 credits. Student option grading.

Conducted in Spanish.

M. A. Garcés.

This course concentrates on the extreme geopolitical tensions represented by the holy wars waged, in early modern times, between Western Europe and the Islamic Mediterranean. Paradoxically, the circulation of men, women, and goods intensified in a parallel way with these conflicts, as revealed by the work of Miguel de Cervantes, who played an important role in these wars. Beginning with the conquest between Muslims and Christians in Spain and the Mediterranean in the 16th and 17th centuries. Particular attention will be paid to the improvisation of identities and cultural exchanges promoted by Arenegades, Christians who converted to Islam and remained in Ottoman territories. Course readings may include Spanish reports of captivity, eyewitness accounts of life in Granada, Algiers, Sicily, Cyprus, and Istanbul, as well as works by Cervantes, Nuñez-Muley, Busbecq, Pérez de Hita, and Antonio de Sosa, among others.
