Spring. 4 credits. Student option grading.

Composer Antonio Carlos Jobim once claimed “Brazil is not for beginners.”  This introduction to Brazilian literature and film - taught in Portufuese - jumps right into the middle of the contemporary Brazilian cultural scene.  Through key topics such as urban violence, migration, soccer, music, and racial politics, the course dwells on the relationship between the fictional and the real and explores cinema and literature as modes of thinking social reality.
