This course surveys the present-day situation and the history of ethnic minorities in Asian countries. We will study how minorities have been defined differently in Asia’s modern nation-states, such as China, Japan, Thailand, and Burma. We’ll investigate how they have been exoticized and admired, demonized and ostracized, discriminated against, and so on; how minorities have figured in radically different ways in ethno-politics of these Asian states, plus how they themselves have contributed to shaping their history, culture and fate. Our basic approach is relational, taking into account the majorities which the minorities relate to; it is also comparative, opening for an alternative perspective not just on Asian countries, but also more generally, in global terms, on identities, races, nations, and ethnicities.
