In this course we explore the special role of items of “cultural heritage” in the global social life of things. We take nothing for granted as regards the value and fate of such desirables. Starting by reassessing the psychology of collecting, and how collected objects are given “value,” we move to the creation of cultural heritage — from history’s war trophies and curiosities collecting, to the new modern institution of the museum, and modern concepts of heritage. We will trace movements of art, antiquities, and other objects transferred from poorer parts of the world to collectors and museums in “the global North,” through looting, smuggling, trade, etc., and discuss the current debates over repatriation on the global arena over the trade and custody of trans-nationally desirable objects.
