PORT 4320 - Brazilian Modernisms

Spring. 4 credits. Student option grading.

Co-meets with PORT 6320 . Conducted in Portuguese.

P. Erber.

This course approaches the many incarnations of modernism and, more generally, of the idea of the modern in Brazilian literature, film, art, and critical theory.  Readings will range from 19th century authors such as Machado de Assis and João do Rio to the high modernism of Mário de Andrade and Oswald de Andrade in the 1920s and all the way to the postwar renovation of art and poetry authors such as Haroldo de Campos, Mário Pedrosa, and Ferriera Gullar.  We will discuss Brazilian modernism in comparative perspective vis-à-vis its Latin American precursors and international counterparts and examine various theories of the modern by authors in Brazil and beyond.
