Rule–making and dispute resolution are integral aspects of sociocultural reality in any society. The ways in which conflict is defined, treated, interpreted, and understood articulate with other domains–such as religion, politics, and economics–that constitute the material and symbolic processes enabling sociocultural reproduction. At issue in this course are the formal and processual means that the treatment of conflict takes in different societies. These means constitute frames for defining experience used by social actors in the interpretation of events within the terms of an overriding sociocultural logic that is in turn reconfigured in the process.
