This course picks up where Introduction to Visual Studies, VISST 2000, left off. The introductory course covered the science & philosophy and the rise of image culture. VISST 3000 introduces students to aesthetics as a problem-solving and a problem-creating dimension of existence, with special emphasis on historical and intellectual context and close formal reading of pictures and objects. Like its predecessor, the course will focus outside the realm of fine art production in order to highlight the common importance of illusion, abstraction, and design.
