PLSCI 4301 - Surveying for Disease in Chilean Vineyards

(CU-CEL, CU-ITL, CU-UGR)
Multi-semester course, Winter. 2 credits (awarded upon completion of all classes in multi-semester course). Second course: R grade only (in progress).

Prerequisite: PLSCI 4300 ; SPAN 1501  or SPAN 3020 . Course fee: $2,900. Permission of instructor required. Offered in Valle Central, Chile. Mandatory trip to Chile during Winter Session. Students must enroll in both PLSCI 4300  and PLSCI 4301 to receive a final grade in PLSCI 4302 . R is recorded for satisfactory progress at the end of the session.

J. Thompson.

The molecular diagnostic methods learned in PLSCI 4300  will be applied to survey for grapevine diseases in Chile’s Valle Central, where most of the country’s wine production is located. Students will have the opportunity to interact with fellow students, faculty, scientists, and growers during a two-week winter-break period split between the lab and field. It is expected that students will finish with a broader worldview and greater confidence to speak, work and study in a foreign language.

Outcome 1: Demonstrate ability to operate alone and in a group in preparing reactions for molecular diagnostic assays (ELISA, Western Blot, PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR, RCA, LAMP, RPA, Arrays and NGS).

Outcome 2: Evaluate and critically examine scientific research articles.

Outcome 3: Develop an appreciation for the diversity of research groups in Cornell, Ithaca and Chile.

Outcome 4: Discuss and appraise molecular biological concepts and their applications.

Outcome 5: Analyze data critically and assess strengths and weaknesses of diagnostic methodologies.

Outcome 6: Assess the changing priorities of regional/global disease challenges.

Outcome 7: Speculate on new diagnostic applications and innovations.

Outcome 8: Articulate worldview from a non-US perspective.

Outcome 9: Express and formulate cultural dimensions of trip to Chile.
