Sustainable development is a dominant economic, environmental, and social concern of the 21st century. This course introduces the key concepts of sustainable development and how they are integrated into life cycle analysis (LCA) assessments of system sustainability.  Students learn to carry out LCA assessments from environmental, economic, and social perspectives.  Students develop these assessments throughout the semester for a system/product of their choice that is relevant to their majors and/or interests, and post their assessment components on an ePortfolio of their project to enable peer sharing and feedback. Course is web-based.

Outcome 1: Students will display an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences (ABET 3).

Outcome 2: Students will demonstrate an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgements which consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts (ABET 4).
