ECE 5415 - Applied Digital Signal Processing and Communications

Fall. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

Enrollment limited to: graduate students. Basic knowledge of programming is beneficial.

Staff.

This course teaches the fundamentals of digital signal processing (DSP) and digital communication using a balanced mix between math and hands-on experiments. The course will start by teaching basic concepts in linear algebra, probability, and signals and systems. The DSP part will cover topics in time and frequency analysis, sampling, filters, and denoising. The digital communications part will cover the basics of modern wired and wireless system design, including modulation, forward error correction, synchronization, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing, and multi-antenna technologies. For both parts of the course, hands-on experiments with acoustic transmitters and receivers will demonstrate the individual concepts. The course will culminate in the implementation of a real-time digital processing algorithm on a Raspberry Pi with Pisound.
