The Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies is Cornell’s hub for research, teaching, and learning about international issues. Founded in 1961, the center provides a home to ten area studies and thematic programs. Two of these – the Southeast Asia Program and South Asia Program – are U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Centers (NRCs).

The center and its programs make research and travel grants to faculty and students; organize conferences, workshops, seminars, roundtables, debates, lectures, and other events; sponsor faculty fellows, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and practitioners in residence; produce books, e-books, journals, working papers, and other publications; offer undergraduate and graduate minors; manage a doctoral dissertation proposal development program; spearhead research initiatives within and beyond the university; provide materials and assistance to educators across New York State; and support interdisciplinary working groups that tackle complex issues of global concern.

The center also cooperates with other international programs on campus and works to internationalize the university’s research, teaching, and outreach agenda. More than 800 faculty members collaborate with the center and its programs.

The Einaudi Center is committed to interdisciplinary, comparative, and collaborative work. It serves as an incubator for projects on topics such as immigration and refugees, global finance, cybersecurity, public health, foreign policy, and renewable energy.

The center’s regular programming includes the annual Henry E. and Nancy Horton Bartels World Affairs Fellowship, which brings an eminent international figure to campus to deliver a public lecture and interact with faculty and students; the Lund Critical Debate Series; the Distinguished Speaker Series; the Roundtable Discussions Series; and Current Events Roundtables during reunion week and in cities such as Washington, DC, and New York. Most of the area studies and thematic programs host weekly seminars and other events throughout the academic year.

The center offers an International Relations Minor (IRM) for undergraduates. Other available minors include Latin American studies, modern European studies, French studies, East Asian studies, South Asian studies, Southeast Asian studies, global health, and international agriculture and rural development. The undergraduate course Issues Behind the News (GOVT 3553 ) is supported by the center and offered by the Department of Government in the College of Arts and Sciences. 

The Einaudi Center administers the Einaudi-SSRC Dissertation Proposal Development Program, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, and the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad awards. The two NRCs administer the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) program, which provides funds for graduate and undergraduate students.

Through its NRCs and area study programs, the Einaudi Center provides educators at community colleges, four-year colleges, universities, and K-12 public schools in New York State with resources, activities, and special events related to Africa, East Asia, Europe, Latin America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
