The undergraduate major in chemical engineering comprises a coordinated sequence of courses beginning in the sophomore year and extending through the fourth year. Students who plan to enter the major take CHEM 2090 - CHEM 2080 or CHEM 2150 with AP credit during the freshman year. The program for the last three years is as follows:
*Every student must complete one of the seven following options for the biology elective: (1) advanced placement: a score of 5 on the CEEB AP exam or a score of 7 on the IB Higher Level exam. (2) CHEME 2880 - Biomolecular Engineering: Fundamentals and Applications (spring, 3 credits). (3) CHEME 5430 Bioprocess Engineering (fall, 3 credits). (4) 8 credits of a pre-med biology sequence: BIOG 1500 - Investigative Biology Laboratory (academic year, 2 credits) and BIOMG 1350 - Introductory Biology: Cell and Developmental Biology (academic year, 3 credits) and BIOG 1440 - Introductory Biology: Comparative Physiology (academic year, 3 credits), or BIOG 1445 Introduction to Comparative Anatomy and Physiology, Individualized Instruction (academic year 4 credits), BIOG 1107 - Introductory Biology I: From Atom to Cell (summer, first half of eight-week session, 4 credits) and BIOG 1108 - Introductory Biology II: From Cell to Biosphere (summer, second half of eight-week session, 4 credits) and BIOG 1500 Investigative Biology Laboratory (summer, six week session, 2 credits). (5) 3 credits of microbiology: BIOMI 2900 - General Microbiology Lectures (fall, spring, or summer six-week session, 3 credits). (6) 4 credits of biochemistry: BIOMG 3300 - Principles of Biochemistry, Individualized Instruction (fall or spring, 4 credits) or BIOMG 3330 - Principles of Biochemistry: Proteins, Metabolism, and Molecular Biology (summer six-week session, 4 credits). BIOMG 3350 (spring, 4 credits). (7) 5 credits of biochemistry: BIOMG 3310 - Principles of Biochemistry: Proteins and Metabolism (fall, 3 credits) and BIOMG 3320 - Principles of Biochemistry: Molecular Biology (spring, 2 credits).
***The electives in semesters 6, 7, and 8 comprise 9 credits of major-approved electives and 6 credits of advanced CHEME electives.
