University Record Holds

The University assumes certain legal responsibilities for persons who participate as students in the University environment. As a result, specific requirements must be met in order to be eligible to remain enrolled for a current term or enroll in a subsequent term. A hold prevents you from taking necessary actions to adjust your record. Holds may be related to academic, financial, advising, student health, or conduct reasons, and must be resolved by the student to enroll in courses, including add/drop, or to receive your diploma. Holds may also prevent a student’s access to various campus resources. Based on the type of hold and the impact of the hold, Cornell University reserves the right to withdraw a student at any point of the term. If a student is withdrawn, re-enrollment in the same term is not guaranteed.  If a student subsequently re-enrolls, the student will be assessed a late registration fee.

Resolve your holds as quickly as possible by following the instructions associated with each hold:

1. Log in to Student Center.
2. Navigate to the holds card on the upper left-hand side of Student Center.
3. Click on the Details link.
4. Select a hold to view its description and instructions.  This explains the hold and what steps to take to clear the hold.  .

Provisions for students using veterans benefits:

In accordance with Title 38 US Code 3679 subsection (e), Cornell University adopts the following additional provisions for any students using U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Post 9/11 G.I. Bill® (Ch. 33) or Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (Ch. 31) benefits, while payment to the institution is pending from the VA.  The University will not:

• Prevent nor delay the student’s enrollment;
• Assess a late penalty fee to the student;
• Require the student to secure alternative or additional funding;
• Deny the student access to any resources available to other students who have satisfied their tuition and fee bills to the institution, including but not limited to access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities.

However, to qualify for this provision, such students may be required to:

• Produce the Certificate of Eligibility by the first day of class;
• Provide written request to be certified;
• Provide additional information needed to properly certify the enrollment as described in other institutional policies.
