Student Health Insurance

It is Cornell University policy that all students have quality health insurance coverage that supports their health, well-being, and ability to participate fully in the Cornell experience.

To ensure that students have adequate insurance, annually, full-time registered students must either confirm enrollment in SHP or, if eligible, waive. Students who do not enroll or waive are automatically enrolled in Cornell’s Student Health Plan (SHP). SHP, which provides excellent coverage on campus, in the Ithaca community, and anywhere in the world. (Exception: some NY State Medicaid-eligible students may enroll in SHP Plus.)

Eligible domestic students who can demonstrate that they have alternate health insurance that meets Cornell’s requirements may apply to waive their enrollment in SHP. To receive a fall semester waiver, continuing students must waive by June 30th; newly matriculated students must waive by July 31st. Additionally, waived insurances will be re-validated in January because most employer-based and exchange plans change or renew in January. Students whose insurance passes the re-validation will receive a spring semester waiver. Students whose insurance does not pass the re-validation by January 31st, will be enrolled in and bursar billed SHP for the spring semester.
