BEE—Biological & Environmental Engineering

  • BEE 3600 - Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering

Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

Prerequisite: BEE 2600 , biochemistry, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, or permission of instructor.

    B. Barstow.

Biotechnology viewed at the cellular and molecular level. Advances in biotechnology are broken down to their functional parts using the tools of biological engineering (thermodynamics, transport, kinetics, etc.) to understand how and why they work with an emphasis on design. Particular attention paid to gene therapy, synthetic biology, protein engineering, and nucleic acid engineering. Case studies in biomedical, bioprocess, and bioenvironmental engineering.

Outcome 1: Students will apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to define and solve problems in molecular and cellular bioengineering.

Outcome 2: Students will demonstrate improved ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.

Outcome 3: Students will gain proficiency in use of the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
