ASIAN 5505 - Methodology of Asian Language Learning and Teaching


Spring. 2 credits.

Priority given to graduate students in Asian Studies and Linguistics. Limited enrollment. Primarily intended for graduate students slated for TA-ship in Asian languages, but it is open to other interested students too if space permits.

This is a course for anyone interested in the pedagogy of Asian languages; required for graduate students seeking appointment as teaching assistants and those seeking continuing appointments as teaching associates in the Department of Asian Studies for Chinese, Hindi and Urdu, Japanese, and Korean. The course presents theories of language teaching and learning, provides classroom observation and practice teaching, and outlines the basics of phonology, morphology, grammar, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and discourse structure and other features of language use.
