ASIAN 6665 - Japanese Theatre: Space, Sound, and Spectacle

Spring. 4 credits.

Co-meets with ASIAN 3365 /PMA 3721 .

J. Kanemitsu.

An introduction to Japanese performing arts, including early shamanism, the fourteenth-century genres of nō drama and kyōgen comedy, theatrical forms of Tokugawa Japan (1600-1868), and  the all-female Takarazuka musical revue in the early 1900s. In addition to examining pivotal transitions in itinerant storytelling, dramatic texts, and dramaturgical treatises, we will also consider performance spaces, traditions of artistic transmission, and changing social contexts.  All readings will be in English; no knowledge of the Japanese language required.
