May be used for Social Sciences Requirement/Satisfies Geographical Breadth Requirement. This course focuses initially on the rise and decline of the apartheid system and the challenges of effective transformation toward a post-apartheid society in South Africa. The course also explores salient political and socioeconomic developments and challenges in neighboring Southern African countries (Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe). It finally examines initiatives for strengthening Southern African security arrangements and other regional collaborative endeavors, as well as post-apartheid South-Africa’s enhanced role in continental African and global arenas.
