BIOMG 4860 - [Eukaryotic Genetics]

(PBS)
Spring. 4 credits.

Prerequisite: BIOMG 2800 . Next offered 2014-2015. Enrollment limited to: 50 students.

E. Alani.

In this course we develop fundamental skills in eukaryotic genetic analysis through lectures and by reading, analyzing, and presenting research articles. Concepts are presented within the context of a well-studied field, such as chromosome segregation. The basic genetics tools that have been developed are then used to analyze other topics such as vegetative and meiotic cell cycle control, and mouse, plant, and human disease genetics.

Outcome 1: Possess a working knowledge of fundamentals of genetics (mutation screens, characterizing mutations, mapping mutations, and analyzing mutations using a “geneticist’s tool box”).

Outcome 2: Apply quantitative reasoning from the basic principles of physical, chemical and biochemical sciences to solve problems in genetics.

Outcome 3: Communicate the fundamental concepts of genetics both in written and oral formats.

Outcome 4: Critically analyze and criticize data from journal articles, and propose additional experiments.

Outcome 5: Reconstruct experimental approaches by reading scientific abstracts and newspaper articles that describe an exciting finding in genetics.
