J. Reveal.

Analysis of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature and its application to various plant groups.

Outcome 1: The purpose of the course is to examine the provisions in the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants (ICN), the document used throughout the world to effectively and validly establish scientific names of plants and related organisms. The goal is to provide students with the means to evaluate past and current literature and to effectively apply provisions of the Code to what has been done to establish names in the past, and to establish new names presently. As a result students must be able to find and critically exam the systematic literature in a multitude of languages, integrate the international rules to arrive at a conclusion on the validly of any given name, and to be able to effective convey that information in their own modern systematic, monographic or floristic writings.
