COMM 4940 - Special Topics in Communication


Fall, spring, summer. 1-3 credits, variable.

Permission of instructor required. Study of topics in communication not otherwise provided by a department course and determined by the interest of faculty members and students. Please check department website for most up-to-date offerings. A follow-up course (spring 2014) is planned for students who want to implement the fall designed study. Students need not enroll in both the fall and spring course.

Topic (Fall): Advanced Visual Communication Research

Students will explore the literature on visualization, and how lay audiences understand and react to visualizations  of  risks. This course will guide students in developing an appropriate research methodology for studying visualizations of risk messages, define appropriate theory, research questions and hypotheses and develop the tools needed to generate evidence to answer those questions.
